Zuzana Števulová is a young Slovakian lawyer, human rights activist, and lecture at the University of Trnava. Zuzana is well known for campaigning for refugee and migrant rights in Europe as the chair of the Human Rights League and helped to construct the Integration Policy for the Slovak Republic, a country where the majority of asylum applications are rejected. As a lawyer, she has won numerous cases at Slovakia’s Supreme Court on behalf of clients in expulsion and asylum proceedings. In recognition of her work, Števulová was awarded the U.S. State Department’s International Women of Courage Award in 2016. Accepting the award, Števulová stated, “I sincerely believe that it is our moral obligation to ensure refugees are treated with respect and dignity and are able to exercise their rights, find safety and continue with their lives as soon as possible. To ensure this, we do not need much, we have all the tools and means available. Sometimes it only takes a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens, who can make a difference.”

The art of Slovakia can be represented by its traditional handicrafts of egg-decorating and wood prints. In the modern era, Slovakia art combined this detail-oriented aesthetic with more formal painting. As Slovakia gained its sovereignty, many of its artists moved from these expressions as they were asked to dedicate their talents to the state. These commissioned assignments varied widely, from currency design to postage.
